Participants signed in at the REI tent and picked up water bottles and snacks for the day. City Parks and Rec Staff and Forest Service staff welcomed everyone to the event and handed off the logistics of organizing the volunteers to the trail crew leaders.
After being organized into small work crews, the volunteers picked up tools and headed up the trail to do work. Water-bars and water control structures were cleaned out and reconstructed, brush growing into the trail corridor was cut back, and the trail bed was cleared where slough had come down. Additionally trail signs were installed to direct users away from “illegal” trail spurs.
Of special note was Mark Guy and his crew from Santa Barbara County Parks and Rec were clearing brush and water bars, Kyah Laporte LP Ranger was on brushwork, Amanda Burgess of SB City assisted with trail user info, and Montecito Fire was on hand for medical support. The new Santa Barbara District Ranger, Pancho Smith of the Los Forest Service was on hand to thank volunteers for the work they where doing. And finally trail user Drew who had planned on hiking that day, but saw the other volunteers and joined in…!
After over six hours of volunteer work, the crews headed to Manning Park for an excellent BBQ lunch supplied by the Santa Barbara Chicken Ranch. REI brought some great equipment for a post event raffle – and a few volunteers went home with new gear.
The event was organized by SBMTV and supported by the Multi Use Trails Coalition, SB County Outdoor Foundation, Los Padres Forest Association, REI, Montecito Fire and our local land management agencies: Santa Barbara City, Santa Barbara County, and the Los Padres Forest Service.
