Executive Director, Sage Trail Alliance

Status: Full-time, salaried position

Sage Trail Alliance (formerly Santa Barbara Mountainbike Trail Volunteers), an IMBA chapter and 501(c)3 non-profit organization, has been maintaining multi-use trails in Santa Barbara County since 1988. Through our network of dedicated volunteers, who invest over 2000 hours of time each year, as well as collaboration with other trail groups, government agencies, and professional trail builders, we make Santa Barbara’s trails more sustainable, enjoyable and safe for all user groups. The Board of Directors has been developing a strategic plan to grow our organization, engage the broader outdoor community, and expand our mountain bike trail network. We are looking for an Executive Director to help develop and implement this plan. You will be working towards Sage Trail Alliance’s strategic and programmatic goals by attracting grants and private donations, cultivating relationships with local land managers to facilitate sustainable trail building, and building collaborations with other trail groups.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about sustainable multi-use trails and mountain biking, and demonstrate experience with relationship building and leadership. The position will report to Sage Trail Alliance’s Board of Directors and members. The Board will work with the Executive Director to detail measurable goals for each year of employment.

Responsibilities of the position include:

● Developing, updating, and implementing a plan for growth in funding resources, trail building capacity, and organizational capacity
● Facilitating communication between Sage Trail Alliance, local and state agencies, and other stakeholders
● Cultivating opportunities and partnerships for trail development throughout the region
● Developing, engaging and mobilizing volunteer leadership
● Actively cultivating, documenting and disseminating best practices in all aspects of sustainable trails advocacy, trails and land conservation, and user experience
● Representing and promoting Sage at relevant public events and stakeholder meetings
 

Desired qualifications:

● Experience and skill in working with land management agencies, elected officials and other land conservation stakeholders
● Experience in non-profit environment including fundraising or relevant business development experience
● Experience leading and working in a collaborative team environment with a mix of professional staff and volunteers
● Knowledge and understanding of bicycle and outdoor recreation industries
● Ability to recruit and motivate volunteers for grassroots initiatives
● BA or similar level of education recommended
